Zhen Kai graduated in the top third of his law school class and was awarded the Drew & Napier Prize for the Top Student in Advocacy. He represented his law school in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna. The combined SMU team for the 2017 Willem C. Vis and Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moots had received 5 Honourable Mentions. He is also the semi- finalist in the 20th Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition (3rd Southeast Asian Regional Rounds) 2016 and the Howard Hunter Moot 2015.
Zhen Kai’s experience in contentious matters span the fields of restructuring and insolvency, shipping, and international arbitration. His representative matters include the defence of a USD 174 million claim in the Singapore International Commercial Court for breaches of letters of support in respect of bareboat charterparty agreements and an application to set aside an arbitral award in the High Court involving novel jurisdictional arguments.
In respect of insolvency matters, Zhen Kai has experience acting for liquidators in their clawback actions, including the obtaining of Mareva injunctions and the Court’s sanction of a third-party funding agreement in support of liquidator action.
Outside the law, Zhen Kai’s passions include the arts, children, and animals. He enjoys singing in choirs, and was a leader and sidewalker at Riding for the Disabled Association Singapore.
He was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore.
